Hermiston girls head to Mac Court for state

Hermiston helps close down McArthur Court this week, advancing to play in this week's 5A state tournament at the historic University of Oregon arena before it is replaced by a new facility next fall.

The Bulldogs rolled past Madison 58-41 on Friday to advance to the eight-team main draw, where they will face No. 2-ranked Wilsonville at 3:15 p.m. today in t he quarterfinals.

"We're the underdog," said Hermiston coach Steve Hoffert. "They're expected to be in the finals. That can play into our hands if we play well."

At least the Bulldogs drew a familiar opponent.

Hermiston beat Wilsonville in each of the teams' last two state appearances -- in the fourth-place game in 2007 and the semifinals in 2008.

"We're happy we're here in the top eight," said Hoffert, whose team has won six of its last seven games. "We flew under the radar for a while, and I'm not sure a lot of people expected us to be here. I'm just anxious to see how we stack up."
