1B state: Sunnyside Chrisitan boys win title

YAKIMA -- Steven Bosma sank six free throws down the stretch, and Sunnyside Christian held off upstart St. John-Endicott 49-43 on Saturday to claim its third Class 1B boys state championship in four years.

Steven Broersma, saddled with early foul trouble that sparked SJE, added five of his 10 points in the final quarter for Sunnyside Christian (23-3).

Broersma's layin with 1:44 to play snapped a 40-all tie and gave the Knights the lead for good.

Bosma added three free throws and, after a SJE trey, Bosma hit three more and Broersma sank one to seal the win.

The championship is the Knights' third in Class 1B and their sixth overall. In 18 appearances, SC has 11 trophies.

Warren Miller poured in 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Eagles (16-12). He scored 14 of his points in the second half and was named the tournament's MVP.

Cody Flett poured in 26 points as Wellpinit (24-4) routed Moses Lake Christian to place third, its highest finish in four state appearances. MLC (19-7) finished sixth.
