Clinton leads Bickleton girls past Lummi

YAKIMA -- Katelynn Clinton made a splash in the Bickleton girls' return to the 1B state basketball tournament.

Clinton scored 35 points and for a short time held the single-game tournament scoring record to lead the Pirates to a 50-35 first-round win over Lummi on Wednesday at the SunDome.

Bickleton, making its first state appearance since 1981, improved to 17-7. It will play defending champion Colton this afternoon in the quarterfinals.

Clinton made 12 of 28 shots and 11 of 19 free throws, breaking the record of 30 points set by Tori Van Wingerden of Sunnyside Christian in 2007, the first year of the 1B tournament.

Clinton also grabbed 13 rebounds and had eight steals.

Her record was short-lived, however, as Ksenja Fredere of Wilson Creek scored 36 in a 62-59 overtime win over Taholah later in the day.
