Liberty Christian romps in boys district opener

RICHLAND -- Liberty Christian's drive for a fifth straight 2B boys state tournament appearance opened Thursday in leisurely fashion.

The Patriots showed no effects of a 12-day layoff, hitting on 15 of their first 20 shots, opening a 23-point lead and eventually winning 58-46 over Pomeroy in the first round of the Southeast District tournament in Richland.

LC, ranked No. 3 in the state, plays Walla Walla Valley on Monday at Whitman College in the semifinals, with the winner qualifying for state. The Patriots are the defending district champion.

"I was wondering how we'd shoot the ball in this game," said LC coach Terry Watson, whose team eventually cooled off to finish 24-of-55 (44 percent). "I'd say it was pretty good coming off 12 days off."

The Patriots opened the game on an 11-0 run, making their first five shots, and led 22-9 after one quarter. The lead grew to 35-12 after a steal and layup by Brett Dustin, who scored all 12 of his points during the game's first 10 1/2 minutes.

"We were eager to play someone else," said Dustin, who added nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals. "I felt the layoff helped us more than hurt us. We practiced really hard, and our second team is almost like playing one of the better teams in this league."

Jake Siefken and Cody Brockman led LC with 13 points apiece and Bryan Corrigan added 12.

The Patriots had 22 assists and 15 steals, forcing 25 turnovers that they converted into 23 points. Their lead never fell below double digits in the second half.

"Our goal every game is to get 15 steals," Watson said. "And this team shares the ball. Our starting five is so balanced."

Justin Ruark led Pomeroy with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Grant Jenkins added 10 points.
