CBBN boys: Kamiakin, Richland to play for title

WALLA WALLA -- Brian Meneely took a peek at the wall in the Kamiakin High gym before leaving for Tuesday night's CBBN 4A district semifinal against Walla Walla.

"I was wondering when we'd last won it," Meneely said, referring to the district championship.

The last time was 1995, and the seventh-ranked Braves will get a crack at ending that drought after beating No. 4 Walla Walla 66-55.

"Our kids were pretty determined. They felt like they'd let one slip away the last time we'd played," said Meneely, referring to Kamiakin's 77-75 double-overtime loss to Wa-Hi last month.

Case Rada scored a career-high 30 points, and Kamiakin jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never trailed.

"We came out and shot really well," Meneely said. "They came out in the third quarter and amped up the energy, but we were able to withstand their run and made a run of our own."

Gary Winston led Wa-Hi with 20 points and Michael Weisner added 14.

The Blue Devils host a winner-to-regional game Friday against Eisenhower.

The Bombers go for their second district title in three years Friday night at Art Dawald Gym against Kamiakin.

"They had a big run in the third quarter and made it close," Richland coach Earl Streufert said of the Pirates' effort. "But Grant Gallinger came off the bench, played great defense and turned the tide."
