If the Department of the Treasury is hiring, they may want to start looking at the Columbia Basin College softball team.
For one thing, they sure know how to cut a deficit.
The Hawks (14-8 overall, 7-3 NWAACC East) came through with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 to beat Spokane 5-4, salvaging an NWAACC East doubleheader split Friday in Pasco.
“We know we can score, and we’ve shown we have a never-give-up attitude,” CBC coach Adrian Ochoa said. “It would be nice to score these runs earlier so it didn’t have to come down to the last at-bat.”
Brenda Rodriguez tossed a complete game and came up with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth with the Hawks trailing 4-3. The Othello graduate then lined a 1-0 pitch from Spokane’s Lindsey Walchli to the left-center field gap, scoring Hannah Sams and Bailey Walthers to win the game.
If not for a few baserunning blunders in an 8-6 Game 1 loss, CBC might have earned a sweep.
“We ran ourselves out of a couple big scoring opportunities,” Ochoa said. “If we were able to plate a couple of runs, it would have changed our approach in the final innings.”
Breann Warren and Lauren Stewart each hit a pair of home runs for Spokane in Game 1.
Walthers led CBC’s offense, going 5-for-6 on the day with a pair of doubles, three runs and four RBIs. Ashlen Ayers added a two-run home run in the opener.
