After leading the Whitman women’s basketball team to its first 20-win season in the program’s history, head coach Michelle Ferenz was named the Northwest Conference coach of the year Thursday.

The Missionaries lost 55-54 to Whitworth in Walla Walla on Thursday in the NWC semifinals. The loss ends Whitman’s season.

Southridge High graduate Heather Johns also picked up an honor, being named to the all-conference second team. Teammates Sarah Anderegg (Redmond) and Meghan White (Huntington Beach, Calif.) were named to the first and second teams, respectively.

“It’s always nice when you are recognized by your peers — the people you respect and work with,” Ferenz said in a press release. “I think this is a reflection of where our team was expected to be at the end of the season and where we actually ended up.”
