Kennewick's Tucker leads WSU golf to 3rd in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Kevin Tucker, a junior from Kennewick, finished fifth individually and led Washington State’s men’s golf team to third at the 40th annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Sunday.

Tucker led the team throughout the tournament and finished in fifth place in the team’s season-opener, the second-best finish of his WSU career.

“The guys played very well today in a very strong pairing,” said WSU coach Walt Williams. “We beat UNLV in today’s head-to-head matchup, and they are a traditional golf powerhouse.”

Tucker posted a three-round total of 5-under-par 211. He opened with a first-round score of even-par 72, a second-round 5-under 67 and closed with another 72. His 11 career top-25 finishes rank ninth all-time at WSU.

The Cougars finished with a score of 865 (+1). They opened the tournament with a low score of 276, the third-lowest team score in school history.

“That should give us a boost of confidence as we move through the fall schedule,” Williams said. “Overall, I think this was a very good start for my young guys, and I’m relatively pleased with third place out of 16 Division I teams.”

Next up for the Cougars is Sept. 22 at the Northwest Classic Tournament in Corvallis, Ore.
