1978: Uptown Tavern tops Tri-City Businessmen 3-2 in the championship of the District 3 fastpitch softball tournament.

1972: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced it will begin state playoffs for football and baseball starting in the 1973-74 school year. Statewide polling showed that more than half the leagues were in favor of a playoff — rather than media polls — determining the state champion.

1972: Hermiston big man Jim Nuess, a 6-foot-9 post who averaged 18 points a game during his senior season, chose to play basketball at Clark Community College in Vancouver over Columbia Basin College.
