* 1980 -- Final tabulations were made in a weeklong poll of Tri-City Herald readers on whether the United States should boycott the Summer Games in Moscow. Of the 1,010 who responded, 84.5 percent favored skipping the Games. "I certainly feel sorry for our athletes who have prepared and dreamed of this for so long, but I feel we should let the world know we do not condone such 'bully' tactics," said Geneva Peiot Wallace of Kennewick.

On the same day, Quenna Beasley scored 20 points to lead the unbeaten Pasco girls to a 56-54 win at Walla Walla, wrapping up the Big Nine championship. Meanwhile, Gilbert Garcia and John Killian led the Sunnyside wrestling team to a 51-15 win over Grandview for the Grizzlies' fifth straight Mid-Valley League title and 13th in 14 seasons.

* 1976 -- Ken Potter scored two points, but his 14 assists helped the visiting Sunnyside boys basketball team defeat Toppenish 69-37 in Mid-Valley play. "He's the best passer I've ever seen," Sunnyside coach Lane Hemming said.
