Track and Field: Violet Heidt of Seton Catholic wins 200, 400 and triple jump at 1A District 4 meet for new state lineup

May 21-Violet Heidt has the fifth-best mark in the state in Class 1A in the long jump this season.

But the Seton Catholic junior won't be competing in that event at the state meet next week in Yakima.

Heidt is focusing more on the running events this season.

Last year, Heidt competed in the 200 meters, 4×400 relay, pole vault and long jump at state.

This year, it will be the 200, 400, relay and triple jump, as the junior won all four events Thursday at the 1A District 4 meet at Seton Catholic.

"I think I've focused a lot on the 400, especially this year," Heidt said. "It was a big decision to cut long jump. But I did the 200, and it's working out well for me. I'm really happy about that. And, of course, we have our (4×400) team, which I love running. It's super fun."

Heidt will head to state's No. 2 mark in the 200, No. 3 in the 400 and No. 3 in the triple jump after setting a meet record of 37 feet, 6.25 inches on Thursday.

"It's been a long time coming because I've been doing that in practice," Heidt said of the triple jump. "It feels really good to finally get that big jump."

Heidt has a simple goal as she heads to state next week in Yakima.

"I want to win," she said. "I want to win state. That's a big goal of mine. I want to go, do my best, have fun, get some first-place medals."

Heidt was one of three multi-event winners for Seton Catholic as the Cougars ran away with the team title over La Center 147-84.

Hailey Herboth won the 100 meter hurdles (16.14 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (46.83). Tiffany Sheldon won the javelin (118-7) and discus (117-11).

Other winners in the girls meet included Conley Richardson of Seton Catholic (3,200, 11:53.47), Samantha Evans of Columbia-White Salmon (high jump, 5-5), Kacey Curtis of Kalama (pole vault, 10-6) and Fatou Bojang of Fort Vancouver (long jump, 16-7.25).

In the boys meet, Jackson Short of Seton Catholic beat Riley Sweeney in a showdown of two of the top competitors in the state in the 110-meter hurdles. Short won in 15.15 seconds as the Seton boys also took the team title.

Sweeney had to fight off Kyler Dixon at the finish line to win the 300-meter hurdles in 41.02.

Other winners included Aiden Zahniser of King's Way Christian (high jump, 6-0), Riley Mazza of Kalama (pole vault, 12-6) and Abel Koski of Kalama (triple jump, 41-6.5).
