The benefits of the Benton County public safety sales tax are obvious; an increase in police officers, an additional Superior Court Judge, more deputy prosecutors, and a number of prevention programs. All of which aren't possible unless the voters pass this important measure.
There are two other aspects of this proposal I like. The first is that it expires in 10 years. Too often voters are asked to support a tax increase to address a specific need. When that need passes the tax continues on forever. Not in this case. If the need still exists in 10 years then we can vote to continue it. Otherwise it ends.
The second is that the county and each city determine how to use the money so as to meet their individual needs. The state is not dictating to the county and cities how to spend their money. The county is not dictating to the cities how to spend theirs. Each city's need is different than the other cities. This measure allows each to determine what is best for their community.
This is a well thought out proposal. It is necessary and justified. I urge other voters to join me in supporting it.
