Washington state is on the brink of becoming the first state in the country to enact universal health coverage for its residents if we can get Initiative 1600 on the ballot in the upcoming November election.
Whole Washington is an ambitious group of citizens, physicians and healthcare providers determined to get this initiative passed. There are no paid signature gatherers. It’s all being done by volunteers who are passionate about how important this is to the state and the entire country.
With the passage of I-1600, it is estimated the state will save $9 billion annually. It includes vision and dental.
The measure has been endorsed by The Washington National Organization of Women, The League of Women Voters, Our Revolution, Physicians for a National Health Program of Western Washington, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46, Edmonds Education Association, Seattle Education Association and many Democratic legislative districts in the state.
But we really need your help.
We need to collect 250,000 valid signatures by July 1, and at the moment we have 30,000. We’re actually aiming for 300,000 signatures to make sure we get 250,000 valid signatures.
Please go to the websites and learn more about how it may affect you and your present health insurance, and how it will greatly affect those without insurance coverage. Instead of paying insurance companies, dedicated taxes would fund a trust that covers healthcare expenses.
There are many ways to help: signature gathering, phone banking and donating money if you can afford it.
Ask your doctor, nurse or healthcare provider if they have heard of it and what they think. Talk to your neighbors, friends and co-workers on your social platforms.
Encourage your employers to look into it to see if they could save money on insuring their employees. Spread the news.
Let us be the first state in the country to guarantee universal healthcare coverage for all its citizens. You could be what it takes to make this happen.
