A picture is worth a thousand words. The exploding A bomb is a picture — a symbol if you will.
Symbols, such as the Confederate flag, can indeed be tricky as a vehicle to convey information. The meaning it conveys will always remain in the eye of the beholder, not its creator. Understand that, as in art, some believe studied training is necessary to understand and appreciate what an artist is trying to convey.
So Burt Pierard (TCH, July 26), you can argue all you wish regarding what this bomb symbol means to you and presumably others. It’s naive to believe that you can explain to others why it’s such a meaningful and appropriate symbol and should “understand” and possibly “appreciate” its meaning to you.
The symbol’s beauty or its horror will always remain in the eye of the beholder.
