On July 18, believing my wife that we were just having a few friends over for dinner, I was surprised by a gathering of more than 20 friends and family, at which I was presented with a handmade quilt by the local group of the Quilts of Valor Foundation in recognition of my service in Vietnam as a USAF forward air controller.
I am honored and thankful to have been selected for this gift by the quilt’s creator, Diana (Bennett) Ground (assisted by her sister, Cecilia). Diana was a classmate of mine at Richland High School (Class of ’64).
Presentation of the quilt was done by John Cole and Mick Hemphill (both RHS Class of ’66). John and Mick are also Vietnam veterans. John was an Army helicopter pilot, and Mick served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation.
I am grateful for their efforts to say welcome home to me and many other Tri-Cities veterans.
