Columbia Basin College lost a legend recently. John Howard and I coached together during the 1960s at CBC.
He coached wrestling and I coached basketball. Since our seasons ran consecutively, we used the old gym together for our practices. There was a basketball floor and a raised stage at the north end of that old gym. One day during practice, one of his wrestlers came flying off the stage and right into our practice. Since that day, we had a net installed at the edge of the stage and that incident never happened again.
You would assume that we never had very good teams with those conditions. Well, John went eight straight years and never lost a dual match. He developed NCAA and Olympic champions. He also coached the golf team after I did. I had one pretty good team and he developed the golf program into one of the most highly regarded programs in the Northwest.
To everyone who knew him he was “Coach.” Over the years when we played golf together I also called him by that name. Everyone he touched over the years feels the same way about him. CBC certainly lost a legend.
