Mr. Johnson (July 5) wants to associate the Confederate flag with the Richland Bombers. But that’s a non sequitur. The Confederate flag is better compared to the Japanese Imperial Rising Sun flag of World War II.
Both of their economies depended on slave labor. Both of them institutionalized rape. Both of them sent their boys out to die so industrialists could line their pockets. Of course, the Japanese rounded up cities and towns and shot the citizens, like at Nanking, used germ warfare, et cetera. Yet, one can still find Rising Sun logos on Amazon merchandise. I wonder how the Chinese, Filipinos and Koreans feel about that?
The Arizona did not capsize. That was the Oklahoma. If one had been to the memorial one would have known that. We have seen modern Japanese tourists at Pearl Harbor. They are as respectful as Americans at the Hiroshima Memorial.
The atomic bombs ended the Japanese Empire, thereby freeing millions of people FROM slavery. Nothing that ends a tyranny rooted in exploitation is completely without merit. It’s ugly. It’s regrettable. But it is better than the alternative.
