Letter: Americans evenly split on social issues

In the richest country on Earth, about 51 million Americans, 18.9 percent, are without health insurance. That includes nearly one out of every 10 children. Americans have died because they lack health insurance.

Get the facts straight about the Affordable Care Act. On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the ACA into law. As a result, 105 million Americans no longer have lifetime dollar limits on their coverage. More than 17.6 million children with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage.

Starting in 2014, no American can be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. Your coverage can no longer be dropped when you get sick. Thanks to the 80/20 rule, insurance companies must spend at least 80 percent of your premium on medical care. Insurers must also cover a number of preventive services. Nearly 3.1 million uninsured young adults can stay on their parents' plans until age 26.

About one-half of the country believes there is a moral imperative to ensure that all Americans have a sustainable income, affordable housing, health care, a quality education, equality and social justice. The other half do not. Where do you stand?
