BINK OWEN, Walla Walla
Thank you for the Sept. 7 article on former Ravens owner Art Modell's death.
Although moving the Cleveland Browns football team to Baltimore broke the hearts of those fans, part of the reason for their relocation was the city's refusal to bend to Modell's wishes to build him a new stadium for the team. Yes, like the proverbial child who doesn't get his way, Modell picked up his ball and went elsewhere.
Modell's reputation landed in Cleveland's "dog pound" again in the matter of wanting the team colors, a trademark of the Browns. The judge ruled in favor of Cleveland retaining the team's colors and uniforms.
Years earlier, Modell angered Browns' fans when he fired legendary coach Paul Brown, a man whose stature to this day puts Modell in the shadows, as any fan of Paul Brown's immortal teams of the late '40s and all of the '50s could tell you.
