Concerning the "Thumbs down" section of Aug. 27 Our Voice column, I would like to say that considering Todd Akin is a candidate for the U.S. Senate and has been a congressman, his remarks should not be lightly dismissed.
He made efforts to restrict abortion rights, along with Congressman Paul Ryan, now candidate for vice president of the United States.
We may laugh at the phrase "legitimate rape" and wonder "what is illegitimate rape." Well, it probably is a woman accusing a man of rape, and he counters with "Well, we had sex but it was consensual." It then becomes a "he said, she said" case. The case could drag on for years.
Under Akin's rule, would the woman have a right to an abortion? This outcome is what is idiotic, not his original statement.
We can all agree that the economy is important, but being dismissive of reproductive rights will not help the economy. Women's ability to contribute to the well-being of her family can be dependent on her reproductive rights.
