Fact check: Rob McKenna's TV ad is telling us that Washington has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. A quick look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics website reveals that the national unemployment rate in June 2012 was 8.2 percent, and Washington's unemployment rate was very close at 8.3 percent.
Fourteen states have unemployment rates higher than Washington. The highest unemployment rate was Nevada's at 11.6 percent. Moreover, Rob McKenna's ad does not mention that Washington's unemployment rate dropped a full percentage point over the past year from 9.3 percent in June 2011.
This is not to suggest that an unemployment rate of over 8 percent is good by any measure, but these statistics do suggest that Washington's unemployment rate is not one of the nation's highest, that Washington is at least on a positive track, and that Candidate McKenna's TV ad is misleading.
Don't be fooled by the framing of any candidate's TV message.
