In regard to Le'ann Cherry's letter Sunday, "Take a stand." Cherry appears to put the blame on Karen Klein for being bullied by the students on the bus and not doing anything about it. Cherry wrote, "Kick the disruptive kids off the bus," and, "Make it be someone who could actually be strong enough to do something."
Cherry is wrong. I doubt she's been in our public schools the last 10-15 years. I have, as a teacher and substitute teacher for 12 years.
The students know the system: "Students rule, all else beware." The lack of consequences for students is appalling. They know no respect. Teachers, substitutes, and monitors are at their mercy. You cannot so much as point your finger at a student. They point right back and tell you, "That's a threat."
If Klein had done as Cherry suggested, she would have been told never to come back. That's our public schools these days. So why do I and many others continue to teach and substitute teach? We have bills to pay, and we need to eat. I'm just not sure who is going to pay for our therapy sessions.
