I cannot believe that Washington residents condone the use of paid signature collectors for voter initiatives, but that is what is happening.
The person I spoke to at Albertson's in Pasco, who was collecting signatures for the Initiative 1240 -- charter schools -- lives in California and is paid based on how many signatures he gathers.
He didn't know that we have voted to defeat charter schools in Washington three times already!
It's a job for some people to travel state to state to collect signatures for something. Who do you think is paying them? If Washington residents wanted charter schools, they would be out gathering the signatures. One gatherer was telling people that it means lower taxes and one said that 40 new schools would be built if it passed. They are saying whatever they can to get the signatures, even if it's not the truth. Question them when you see them. You will be amazed at the answers. Please: Decline to sign.
