On Saturday, I was pleased to attend the 50th anniversary celebration of Ice Harbor Lock and Dam. From the uplifting music provided by the 204th Army Band to the friendly welcome from the project manager, to the informational and educational deliveries by the Walla Walla District commander and the commander of the Northwestern Division of the Corp of Engineers, I was taken by the dedication and hard work of all the people to make this a real celebration for the public.
Several employees who worked at the dam when it began were recognized. The reception was casual and friendly. All the employees who conducted tours and answered questions did an excellent job. They were friendly and open to questions. I learned a great deal about hydropower and what Ice Harbor provides to the area.
I was disappointed more people didn't take advantage of the opportunity to tour this amazing facility. It isn't often citizens can walk all the way across the top of a huge dam and watch the boats motor through the locks. That was thrilling. I encourage everyone to watch for publicity about these kinds of events and try to attend. It was a great, free family outing. We all should take opportunities to see our tax dollars at work.
