What did I learn from my dad? I learned to mix business with pleasure. I never heard my parents complain about paying taxes. They were proud and happy that they owned their house, and property taxes were part of that. We lived in Daly City, Calif., and our county seat was San Mateo.
I remember the day my father had a day off and my parents let my brother and me take the day off from school. We packed a picnic lunch and drove to San Mateo to pay the property taxes. That was about 75 years ago, in the midst of the great depression. Enjoy life; that's what I learned.
