Benton County commissioners terminated the county's lease with the Sun Downs Training Center. This is absolutely devesting news to the horse community in Southeast Washington. The facility at the fairgrounds has never looked better than under the care of the Sun Downs Training Center.
My husband and I spent eight months (October-May) boarding and training our race horses there, as well as renting an RV spot to live there. We purchased all of our supplies in the Tri-City area, hay, grain, straw, groceries, clothing and more. The facility was just becoming top notch with all of the activities going on there. It was paying for itself, now it will sit dormant for 11 months out of the year and the maintenance will come out of the taxpayers' pockets. We horseman would like an explanation from the county commissioners as to why the lease was terminated. Sun Downs Training Center had all of the proper Insurance in place and was within the requirements of the lease!

-- Editor's note: Benton County commissioners contend the lease was terminated for cause and have vowed to keep the facilities open for equestrian events.
