We did our big summer driving vacation in April, flying to Utah and renting a car that got very good mileage. I did not consider the cost of gas to be a "gas cost." Instead I called it a "vacation expense," which lessened the psychological pain. The rest of the summer we will probably drive only when necessary, which has pretty much always been our habit. We won't be cutting back on driving. It may cost more than in the past, but I'm retired and this is the future I've been saving for. I plan on enjoying it.
There is a bus stop about 50 feet down the street, and I'm old enough to ride for free. Next time I'm heading the same place the bus is going, I may give it a shot.
