Thank you for printing the op-ed piece, "Invoking faith isn't just for conservatives now," (Voices, May 26).
I grew up in a conservative Christian home and asked Jesus into my heart as a child. I'm now in my 50s, and following Jesus has brought me to some surprising places. I hear Jesus' calls to welcome the outcast; also his outrage at religious people who judge themselves morally superior to others.
Jesus never condemns homosexuality. Old Testament laws on such things cannot be taken at face value, or we'd be stoning rebellious young people, and most of us wouldn't have survived the '60s.
To an open, honest interpreter, Paul's teachings on homosexuality are not as clear cut as they appear at first glance. I believe in the whole Bible as God's word, but I believe Jesus' words, love and grace reveal the Father's heart most clearly. So, why do I support President Obama's social policies? Because I'm a born-again, Bible-believing Christian.
