Figures from the Washington State Office of Financial Management for the year 2009 have Kennewick, Richland and West Richland at a population of 126,260 vs. Prosser at 5,110.
If past population counts are used to project future population, in 20 years, Kennewick, Richland and West Richland will grow to nearly 200,000 while Prosser will expand to 6,400. Currently, the city of Prosser population is 3 percent of the county's total population. In 20 years, with growth continuing to mainly expand at the east side of the county, Prosser would be only 2.6 percent of the total population.
We can't allow this lopsided county inefficiency to get even more out of proportion. We should have moved the county seat years ago. Let's not wait 20 more years for this to be on the ballot again. We can do what is right and provide county services where the people are. Vote YES to move the county seat. These figures can be found in the $55,000 report paid for with your tax dollars. Go to the Benton County website and click on 'County Seat Relocation."
