Letter: Guns aren’t to blame, we are
This letter is in reply to Maddie Baxter’s letter of Nov. 28.
Guns do not kill people. Before guns were invented, people killed people. Many, many objects can be used to commit murder. And not one of these objects can act on their own or follow a human command, but must be wielded by a human hand.
A human uses an object, and therein lies the problem. It’s people who need their wicked hearts changed.
Autos are used to commit multiple murders. Per your reasoning, we should strictly limit their ability to do that by only allowing people to drive golf carts or smart cars. We should certainly restrict explosives. Oh, wait, we do! And yet people obtain them to inflict mass murder and casualties.
A New York Times article published in the Herald places all blame on the easy accessibility of semi-automatic firearms since the 1960s.
That was about the time TV ownership really expanded. How many murders do children and adults see on the idiot box every year? What about the video games children play? We’ve become desensitized to murder and violence.
It’s not the gun. It’s we!
