U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, will face off against Republican Clint Didier of Franklin County in a rematch reminiscent of their hotly contested 2014 race to represent Washington’s 4th Congressional District in Washington, D.C.
Newhouse, who is completing his first two-year term, narrowly defeated Didier in 2014.
Newhouse and Didier, both farmers, were the top two vote-getters in the Aug. 2 primary, qualifying them for the Nov. 8 general election.
With 58,000 votes counted Tuesday night, Newhouse was leading with 27,254 votes, or 46 percent. Didier was second with 15,740 votes, or nearly 27 percent of the total.

Doug McKinley, a Richland attorney running as a Democrat, was third with 13,097, votes or 22 percent. Glenn Jakeman, a Yakima Republican, and John Malan, a Pasco Democrat, each received less than 3 percent of the votes cast.
The 2014 race was a 12-way contest succeed U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, who retired from office that year. Newhouse won with 51 percent of the 153,079 ballots cast, on the strength of his support in urban areas as well as Hastings’ endorsement.
The 1.5 percent margin of victory was the narrowest of any of the 10 House races in Washington that year.
Didier, a former NFL player who won two Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins, has attacked Newhouse’s voting record in his first term as insufficiently conservative.
