The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board will webcast a public meeting and hearing today related to safety culture at the Hanford vitrification plant and other Department of Energy defense-related projects.
A session from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time will include a panel of current and former U.S. Navy officers discussing the Navy's approach to ensuring the safety of its nuclear fleet operations.
A session from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will include government and academic experts discussing the role of organizational leaders in safety culture.
The hearing is the second of three hearings on safety culture planned by the board after it made recommendations to DOE in 2011 about attitudes and policies toward safe operation of the vitrification plant. The first hearing was in May and the third hearing has not been scheduled.
