CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. has been recognized for its 4H Respiratory Protection Program Pilot, a program to minimize its Hanford workers’ radiological and chemical vapor exposure.
The Department of Energy contractor has been given the Voluntary Protection Program Innovation Award for 2013.
The 4H program helps ensure all employees have properly working personal protective equipment when near hazardous materials.
The program modifies equipment to reduce the chance of a respirator filter cartridge separation, includes a checklist to identify congested areas that could harm the integrity of a respirator and supplies a list of tips and best practices not included in manufacturers’ training materials.

The program also includes a checklist to make sure all four connection areas of the respirator are sound.
The safety improvements were a direct result of employee involvement, according to Chris Thursby of CH2M Hill.
