Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been awarded almost $1 million as part of a Department of Energy initiative to help restart the nation's nuclear industry.
Nationwide, DOE awarded $10.9 million to help solve challenges in the nuclear industry and improve reactor safety, performance and cost competitiveness.
The Richland lab said it plans to use the money to develop a new high-temperature structural material for use in advanced reactors as an accident-tolerant replacement for zircaloy cladding. The material could extend the lifetime of fuel, reducing the cost of electricity production, according to DOE.
