Richland High School’s Destination Imagination team is this year’s state champion and will head to the national competition in mid-May.
The team also won the Renaissance Award at the recent state competition in East Wenatchee. That award is given for outstanding skill in design, engineering, execution or performance.
Destination Imagination asks students to work together to develop a solution to a team challenge. That solution can be theatrical, structural, improvisational, scientific, technical or a blend of several concepts.
Richland High’s presentation included a “spectacular UFO hovering 10 feet above the stage,” according to judge’s comments. “Spewing smoke with flashing lights and spinning cans created a great theatrical ending to their skit.”
The team includes sophomores Nick Avila, Jackson Chin, Maddie Graves, Jenacie Jones and Ryan Walker, along with Carmichael seventh-grader Mickinley Chin and Chief Joseph eighth-grader Ben Graves.
