New students and teachers attending Sageview High School will have a song to call their own — and to shout from the top of their lungs — at sporting events this fall.
Some students and teachers have already heard the new “Sageview Fight Song,” but Principal Raquel Martinez hopes to debut it to the wider Lobos body at their first school assembly next week.
The school held its ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on Monday, and Lobos pride was out in full force. Nearly 1,200 students freshmen, sophomores and juniors will call the school home this fall.
The Herald has not heard the tune, but Martinez in an interview characterized it as “catchy.” Students and the school’s band and choir teachers collaborated on it.
“The first time I heard it, I was like, ‘L-O-B-OS’ — and then I couldn’t get it out of my head. It’s definitely catchy. It’s got our student voice in it,” she said.
During summits over the summer, Martinez said staff asked students what they wanted in the song — what would be memorable, what would inspire them and how did they want to be defined?
Several words and phrases came to mind during their discussions, including the idea of strength. Those words were incorporated into the lyrics. The song also includes a drum solo.
The school district’s director of public affairs, Anna Tensmeyer, provided the Herald with a copy of the lyrics.
