Kennewick police have located the Buick they believe was used in an attempted armed robbery in the parking lot of Columbia Center mall.
An officer driving to work spotted the champagne-colored, older car with a Seahawks decal on the back parked by a house on the 900 block of Canal Drive Sunday evening, said officer Jason Kiel.
The door to the house appeared to be open, causing police to believe the house might be being burglarized. The family who lived there was not home.
Police used a loudspeaker to repeatedly order anyone who was in the house to come out with their arms up.
After a couple of hours with no response, Tri-City Regional SWAT officers entered the home. They found no one inside.
At 11 p.m., police were continuing to investigate whether the house had been burglarized and were towing away the car. The family who lived in the house came home during the incident.
There was no indication that the robbery suspect had a connection to the house, Kiel said. He may have abandoned his car there.
Police closed off that block of Canal Drive to traffic Sunday from about 7:30 p.m. until about 10:45 p.m. as they investigated.
On Saturday, three men disarmed a gun-wielding robber in the east parking lot of the Columbia Center mall near Barnes & Noble.
The robber drove up to the men in a Buick, got out, brandished a handgun and demanded their wallets, police said.
One of the men grabbed the robber’s handgun, which discharged in the parking lot, police said. The robber got back in his vehicle and drove off to the west.
The victim suffered a minor hand injury and was treated by the Kennewick Fire Department.
The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, about 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a shaved head and facial hair.
