Prosecutors weighing charges for man shot by officer

The Benton County Prosecutor’s Office is waiting on lab reports before deciding whether to file criminal charges against a Kennewick man who was shot by a police officer.

Prosecutors are reviewing Dennis Jaymes Skellenger’s case and waiting on reports from the Washington State Patrol crime lab, said Kennewick police Sgt. Ken Lattin. There is no time frame for when the reports will be done.

Skellenger, 26, was shot through the chest by Kennewick Officer Jeremy Taylor June 14 after he allegedly pulled a revolver on officers near Horse Haven Hills Park.

Skellenger was recently released from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was being treated for his gunshot wound. The bullet grazed his left wrist, struck his chest and went out his back.

The Tri-Cities Regional Special Investigative Unit is still investigating the shooting and will release more information when the investigation is complete.

Taylor, who has been with department for six years, is on paid administrative leave as the investigation is conducted.
