Boise man in serious condition after suffering burns in crash

A semi-truck driver burned in a fiery crash near Eltopia is in serious condition at a Seattle hospital.

Lawrence Lamberson, 48, of Boise, was taken to Harborview Medical Center on Monday with burns on his arms and face after his truck caught fire when he crashed into the back of another semi-truck on Highway 395.

Lamberson is in the intensive care unit at Harborview, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Washington State Patrol Lt. Jay Cabezuela said Lamberson will likely receive a citation for causing the crash.

Benjamin Garfias, 39, of Kennewick, had turned onto the highway from Elm Road with a load of gravel just before the crash.

He had been on Highway 395 for about 1,000 feet and was accelerating, but Lamberson apparently didn't realize the truck hadn't reached full speed, Cabezuela said.

"There's pretty good visibility coming into that area," Cabezuela said, adding that Lamberson should have been able to see the slower-moving truck.

Garfias was released from Kennewick General Hospital.
