Richland man arrested in theft, car prowls

A 27-year-old Richland man was found hiding in some trees after he left an apartment he likely was going to burglarize following a confrontation with the resident, police said.

Donna Walters called Richland police at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday after finding a suspect inside her apartment at 311 Greentree Court.

Walters said a man with a thin build wearing a ski cap opened her unlocked front door, entered and looked around, police said. When she confronted him, he turned and walked outside.

Officers surrounded the area to search for the suspect and found Daniel Ray Leigh Patterson hiding in some trees off of Aaron Drive, just north of the apartments, police said.

They also found seven unlocked vehicles in the 300 block of Greentree Court, where the glove boxes had been rummaged through and paperwork was thrown out.

Patterson was arrested and booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of residential burglary, second-degree theft and vehicle prowling.
