A squirrel started a small brush fire in West Richland Sunday morning.

People near the area of King Drive and Maple Lane reported hearing a loud pop before flames appeared near the base of a utility pole, police said.

Firefighters from Benton County Fire District 4 extinguished the blaze. About 300 square feet of brush burned. No structures were damaged.

Investigators believe the fire started when a squirrel caused electrical equipment to short circuit, police said.
