A Kennewick woman reportedly stole a cellphone and made a 16-year-old take the blame.
Abigail Aguilar, 18, of Kennewick, allegedly stole a shopper’s phone at the Columbia Center mall Victoria’s Secret about Wednesday afternoon. The victim put down her iPhone 7 and noticed it was gone after she turned around, said Kennewick police Sgt. Ken Lattin.
The theft was reported to police about three hours later after the victim used an app tracker on another friend’s phone to find her iPhone.
That led officers to 18104 S. Myrtle St. where they found Aguilar and a 16-year-old girl, who were described as “less than cooperative.” The younger teen told police she stole the phone, but they didn’t believe her.
Police and Benton County sheriff’s deputies used a search warrant to find the phone in the house but the data card was removed and broken.
Police say Aguilar later allegedly admitted to stealing the phone and convincing the teen to lie about it. Aguilar was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft and booked into the Benton County jail.
