Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels has received two grants to help it better serve seniors.
A $2,300 grant from Banfield Charitable Trust is designed to help low-income seniors provide adequate nutrition for their pets, according to a news release.
Many seniors share food they receive from Meals on Wheels with their pets. The grant allows the pet to have food while ensuring the senior has enough to eat. Battelle volunteers will deliver pet food.
The local agency received another $500 grant for taking part in the Meals on Wheels America’s Community Champions Deliver Meals campaign. Firefighters from Richland and Benton Fire District 4 delivered meals in March as part of the program, which is funded by Subaru of America.
Meals on Wheels delivered more than 152,000 meals locally in 2014, with 312 volunteers.
