Visitors to W.E. Johnson Park in Richland may notice more song birds thanks to a volunteer effort to install nesting boxes along walking trails.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory donated nesting boxes that no longer were needed for research projects and 17 Scouts with Boy Scout Troop 249 installed them in a project coordinated by the Richland Rod and Gun Club.
Species that may nest in the boxes include nuthatches, sparrows, chickadees, wrens, bluebirds and tree swallows.
The club already had some wood duck nesting boxes installed in the park between Highway 240 and the Yakima River.
