A reported fire at the Franklin County jail turned out to be an inmate tampering with a sprinkler Wednesday night, the jail's captain said.
The inmate pulled a piece off a sprinkler in her cell in the newly built section of the jail, causing water to spray for a half-hour until firefighters could arrive to turn it off, Capt. Rick Long said. The building's architects said building codes require sprinklers in all cells.
"Why they think they need to put sprinklers in a non-combustible building, I have no idea," Long said.
Water flowed from the woman's second-floor cell into the day room below.
Long is asking that the inmate be charged with destruction of county property. He said she has been placed in another location in the jail.
In the future, jail officials will be able to shut the water off themselves.
