A Benton County Emergency Management official said he was the first person to notice an inaccurate sign on Interstate 82 that the Herald reported about on Monday.
Ivar Husa provided an email to the Herald showing a June exchange about the sign with then-state Department of Transportation engineer Rick Gifford.
He told Gifford that the sign "reports '395 North to I-82,' when in fact the sign should read '395 North to I-182.' Obviously taking an exit off I-82 will not lead you to 'I-82!' "
Gifford replied that the sign was installed with the wrong interstate shield a year and a half earlier and would be replaced soon.
But the sign still had not been replaced when Husa again emailed Gifford on Dec. 20, only to be told that Gifford had retired. Husa said Gifford's replacement told him a new sticker for the shield would be put in once temperatures warmed up.
