Mabton man killed Sunday when shots fired at Grandview party

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday morning when a fight broke out at a party, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Another person was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Responding to a call about a shooting at an address on Sand Hill Road just outside Grandview city limits, sheriff’s deputies found Carmen Johnson, 20, of Mabton deceased on the property shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the sheriff’s report.

The sheriff’s investigation determined that a large party, possibly with several hundred people, was taking place at the property on Sand Hill Road when a fight broke out and multiple shots were fired, resulting in Johnson’s death and the second victim’s injury.

The sheriff’s report did not identify the second victim.

Deputies have not yet identified the shooter and ask that anyone with information about the crime contact the sheriff’s office at 509-574-2500.

Johnson’s death marks the 21st homicide in Yakima County in 2013, and at least the 13th victim of a gunshot, according to Yakima Herald-Republic archives.

The most recent homicide was Dec. 7, when 62-year-old Jerene Matta was found dead in her home after a house fire and authorities determined she had suffered blunt trauma to the head before dying of carbon monoxide poisoning.
