WISH LIST: Franklin County Museum offering 1-year memberships

Editor's Note: This month the Herald is featuring a series of stories on the Holiday Wish Lists of Mid-Columbia nonprofits and how you can help.

The Franklin County Historical Museum has a big wish this Christmas season: 1,000 members.

The museum, now at 600 members, will give free one-year memberships to anyone who calls and says they read this story, administrator Sherel Webb said.

The memberships typically cost $20 for individuals and $30 for families. They last until October 2014.

"We have for many years had a dream to get 1,000 members," she said. "We get close at periods."

But the dream has always died when some people don't renew their memberships, Webb said.

The museum has free admission, with a $2 suggested donation. But membership also provides gift shop discounts and free subscriptions to the monthly museum newsletter and quarterly Franklin County Historical Society publication, which features longer articles about the county's history, Webb said.

This month's issue has a story about the River-Vue Drive-In movie theater, which was located north of the blue bridge from 1952 until 1995

"This is a real win-win situation," Webb said. "I believe people who sign up for it will be pleasantly surprised."

The museum also makes efforts to bring history to its visitors, including an oral history program where people who lived through historic events are interviewed.

"Our mission is to preserve and promote the unique history of Franklin County," Webb said. "Without us that would just fade away and not exist anymore."

Sandy Johnson wasn't familiar with the museum until someone asked her to be on the historical society board. When she learned more about the facility it "blew me away," she said.

"I think it's so important for the young people to know about the Basin and about Pasco and the museum does a good job keeping up on that," said Johnson, who is taking a year off from the board because of term limits but still volunteers at the museum.

Along with members, the museum's wish list includes money to help it pay for electricity, Internet service, gas, security, outside storage, office supplies and putting together its publications.

Anyone interested in donating or becoming a member can call 547-3714, email fchsmuseum@yahoo.com or mail a letter to Franklin County Historical Society & Museum; 305 N. Fourth Ave.; Pasco, WA, 99301.
