Expect warmer than usual temperatures for September in the Tri-Cities, after a warmer than average August, according to the National Weather Service.
The entire summer also was warmer than normal, according to the Hanford Meteorology Station.
In a normal September in the Tri-Cities, highs fall from 85 at the start of September to 74 at the end of the month. Normal lows fall from 57 to 47.
Precipitation should be near the normal of 0.3 inch for the month.
Although August averaged warmer than usual, it got off to a cool start.
Aug. 2 set a new daily temperature record at Hanford for the coolest high temperature for the date.
The high was 74, beating the previous record of 75 set in 1956, according to the Hanford Meteorology Station, which keeps daily records back to the mid-1940s.
June, July and August averaged 76.1 degrees at Hanford, which was 1.9 degrees above normal.
There were 65 days through August this year with temperatures greater than 90, compared with the average of 49 days through August. However, the 13 days with temperatures greater than 100 through August matches the average.
In August the average temperature in the Tri-Cities was 77.5 degrees, which was 2.4 degrees above normal.
High temperatures averaged 90.4 degrees, which was 1.1 degrees above normal.
The highest temperature, as recorded in Kennewick, was 100 on Aug. 7.
Low temperatures averaged 64.5 degrees, which was 3.7 degrees above normal.
The lowest temperature was 58 on Aug. 21, the only day that the temperature dropped into the 50s.
Precipitation in August in the Tri-Cities totaled 0.28 inch, which was 0.1 inch above normal.
At Hanford 0.24 inch was recorded, which is 133 percent of normal.
Precipitation for 2013 through August at Hanford has totaled 4.15 inch, which is close to average.
The peak wind gust in the Tri-Cities, as measured in Kennewick, was 43 mph on Aug. 25.
At Hanford it was 51 mph on Aug. 9.
Overall August was slightly less windy that usual with an average wind speed at Hanford of 7.4 mph, which is below the normal of 8 mph.
