A new permanent home for the Kadlec Urgent Care clinic should open off West Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick later this year.
Officials broke ground at the site Tuesday.
“This is an important day for us,” said Rand Wortman, president and chief executive officer of Kadlec Health System, during the afternoon ceremony.
The urgent care clinic today operates in rented space on West Deschutes Avenue. It opened last summer.
Wortman said it “just makes good sense” in the long-term to own, instead of rent, a facility. The permanent clinic will sit on a 4.5-acre site next to the Winco Foods on Clearwater; it’s expected to open around December.
The location is a good fit, officials said.
“We realized there were virtually no medical facilities between the mall and down at (Highway) 395 and Clearwater. So we said, ‘Somewhere in about the middle of Clearwater sounds right,’” Wortman said.
The price tag, including construction, equipment and land, is less than $3 million. The 7,500-square-foot clinic will be much larger than the temporary location, said Ken Lester, Kadlec Clinic president.
“We feel a lot of gratitude to be able to serve the people of this community,” he said during the urgent care groundbreaking, adding, “We’re proud of what (the clinic providers and staff) have done on Deschutes, and we know that they’re going to bring that same level of expertise and care here to this site.”
Bouten Construction Co., which has an office in Richland, is the contractor. Kadlec also plans to add another 7,500 square feet in the future at the site for primary care, Lester said.
Several Tri-City officials attended Tuesday’s groundbreaking, including some members of the Kennewick City Council.
Mayor Steve Young said that “over the last few years the partnership between Kadlec and the city of Kennewick continues to get stronger and stronger. We enjoy working with Kadlec; we enjoy seeing the buildings going up. ... This new clinic coming in here will be a great urgent care facility for our community.”
Kadlec’s new freestanding emergency department almost is finished at Highway 395 and West 19th Avenue in Kennewick.
It’s scheduled to open in early June.
